When you hang the putter in a plumb bob position the open tines will give you a reference point to see exactly how much lean there truly is in the fairway, green and finally on the green.
As you can see the tines are open; (open means the tines are lying at a 90 degree angle to the perpendicular shaft of the putter) we show it this way so the viewer can get a better understanding of the manner in which the tines lie open. When they are closed they are up and alongside the shaft of the putter. Thus when you hold the putter in a plumb position the tines show you a perfectly level land lie. You can now use this as a reference point to see the golf course as you never have before.
